PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) Therapy For Hair Loss Q & A

What is platelet-rich plasma (PRP)?

Platelets are specialized cells found in your blood that release growth factors. These specialized cells have powerful healing and regenerative qualities in the body. PRP is the portion of blood that does not contain any red or white blood cells and only a high level of platelets.

PRP is injected into areas of hair loss, high inflammation, or tissue damage. The high concentration of platelets increases healing and decreases inflammation.

What happens during a PRP injection?

Before you have a PRP injection, you’ll have a small sample of blood taken. Your blood is separated using a centrifuge. The portion of blood containing the platelets is removed and saved for injection.

Next, Dr. Paz numbs the treatment area. After the site is numb, she injects the PRP solution into several predetermined areas of the skin. The treatment takes about 30 minutes from start to finish. You will be given specific instructions to follow after your injections.

What are the risks of PRP?

Because PRP is a product of your own blood, there are minimal risks associated with the injection. However, as with any treatment or therapy, there are potential injection site risks like:

  • Irritation
  • Pain
  • Bruising
  • Itching
  • Bleeding

To minimize risks, discuss your medical and medication history with Dr. Paz and follow the pre- and post-procedure instructions she provides you.

What are the benefits of PRP?

There are many benefits to PRP therapy. Dermatological benefits include:

  • Reduction in inflammation
  • Accelerated growth of hair transplants
  • Thickening of existing hair
  • Increase in tissue healing

A treatment that’s growing in popularity to address hair loss, PRP stimulates hair follicles in the treatment area to speed hair growth and even boost thickness of existing hair.

Another benefit of PRP therapy is that the injections contain no animal or synthetic products. Since the injected material is directly from your own body, PRP can be used in conjunction with other dermatologic treatment options.
